Worldwide steel production in 2017, 2016 It increased by 5.3% compared to 1 billion 691 million tons. Türkiye's steel production increased by 13.1% in 2017, reaching 37.5 billion tons. In accordance with the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) agreement signed between the European Union and Turkey in 1996, customs duties in steel trade were mutually abolished. The agreement allows our iron and steel products to be traded with EU member countries without customs duty. In addition, in accordance with the provisions of the ECSC agreement, the state cannot provide incentives to the steel industry. All steel companies operating in Turkey belong to the private sector, and Turkish steel producers constantly follow technological developments in order to consolidate the industry's position in the global market in the long term. The steel industry, one of the most developed sectors in Turkey, is today the fourth sector that makes the biggest contribution to the Turkish economy. There are 24 electric arc furnace (EAF), 5 induction furnace (IO) and 3 basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steel factories in Turkey.
